Das Boot
When people ask me where I live, I say that it rather depends. You see, I live on a boat.
My boat is sixty feet long and seven wide, is black (natch) with a dark red go-faster stripe (does that make me a boat-boy-racer?). She’s called Nostromo and despite her various quirks and occasional unreliability, I love her dearly.
She’s my boat. She’s the best.
I’ve lived on the Grand Union Canal for over four years now, and the lifestyle suits me perfectly. I love the freedom of being able to untie the ropes and chug off somewhere new when I get bored of my surroundings.
Fancy a bit of city life? I cruise to London and settle in Little Venice for a bit.
A nice town? How about Rickmansworth or Berkhamstead?
Or some quiet time? The countryside in Tring is beautiful, or Cassiobury Park, or just outside Kings Langley.
Home is where I can hammer a mooring pin in.
And why the name Nostromo?
Well, when I first bought the boat she was called Lazy Rhythm. Uh-uh. Didn’t like that. So after a lot of thought I decided on Nostromo.
Here’s a clue as to why I chose that name: Poor Kane and that scene around the meal table.
Got it? No? Well the answer is Alien, one of my all-time favourite films, and one which scared me half to death when I accidentally stumbled on it on Channel 4 when I was about ten. The damage to my young mind was incalculable.
Nostromo is the name of the spaceship in the film – specifically a Lockmart CM-88B M-Class starfreighter.
Yes, I am a colossal geek.
Here are some photos of my boat (and one of the other Nostromo).
